about

“Badi bayr” (great calamity) are the main words from this tradition of Hindustani khayal passed down by the late-Gwalior Ustad Hameed Ali Khan. It speaks to the great calamity that enveloped Pakistan in 2022 with epochal flooding. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros, Sonic Meditations, this acousmatic composition seeks to recount a young girl’s thought journey as her family tries to walk through the flood waters and is rescued by a motor boat. There are slips and falls and the loss of some loved ones on the way and increased anxiety about what is to come next.
